Program Description:

Mental Health America in Hawai`i's Maui County Branch was established in 1972. Its ongoing goals are to develop a good system of care for children and adults in Maui County and to combat stigma and shame associated with mental illness, so that people will find help when help is needed. All of the Branch's programs reflect collaboration with consumers, families, and service providers working together toward these goals. Our education on Maui often initiates community action to improve mental health care and staffing of local mental health services. Children and Youth: MHAH-Maui organizes forums on bullying, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, provides children and youth mental health training for Maui County police recruits and dispatch workers, and sponsors the Annual Wellness Poster Contest in Maui County Schools for grades K-5, with 500 - 1,000 school children participating. Advocacy: MHAH-Maui organizes advocacy press conferences and letters to public officials, and hosts Town Meetings for the State Mental Health Transformation team. Regular trainings are provided for all Maui County Police recruits on how to interact and refer adults with mental illnesses. Education: MHAH-Maui offers Brown Bag programs on child, adult and family issues with accompanying Maui News columns. Family support groups and classes are provided through partnerships with NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) and Autism Bridges Maui.
